How to Get Free Clothes By Earning From Your Data

Discover the best tips for getting free clothes through gift cards, thrifting, couponing, buying out of season, and more.

How much, on average, do you spend on clothing per year? According to Statista, U.S. consumers spend an average of up to $200 per month on clothing and apparel purchases. That’s $2,400 on average per year! While clothing is a necessity, spending so much on it isn’t. There are many tips and tricks you can use to discover smart ways to save on clothing purchases below.

2. Buy out of season

A failsafe way to save on clothes is simply to buy them out of season. Fashion retailers large and small tend to have out-of-season clearance sales both online and in their stores to get rid of older stock. This is an ideal time to go bargain hunting as you’ll often find terrific pieces at a fraction of their original cost. You can stock up on next season’s wardrobe this way, without having to pay the full in-season cost.

3. Thrifting

For many people, thrifting isn’t just about finding a good deal – it’s a fun weekend hobby! Thrift stores sell second-hand clothing and accessories generally at extremely discounted prices. These shops often have special sales on top of their discounts, like weekly or month-end payday specials.

The fun of thrifting is you never know what hidden gems you might find. Sometimes you can find authentic designer clothes that have simply been cleared out by former owners. Just make sure you don’t confuse thrift stores with vintage stores – vintage stores sell older clothing at a higher rate while thrift shops sell more modern, recent second-hand clothing at a reduced price.

4. Use coupons

If bargain hunting isn’t your thing, you can always opt for using coupons to get great discounts on clothing. There are plenty of coupon-oriented websites that partner with a variety of retail stores to offer coupons to help sell stock. You can browse online to find coupon offers and special deals.

There are even coupon-locating apps for Android and iPhone, designed to help you find coupons according to your preferences. These apps include Deals Finders, The Coupons App, KCL, Coupon Closet, and Coupon Sherpa. Many of these apps and websites offer a treasure trove of coupons and special promos, including Nike promo codes as well as Target promo codes.

5. Stock up on the basics from generic brands

Most of our wardrobes consist of everyday staples like t-shirts, socks, comfortable pants, and practical undergarments. We might have several signature or statement pieces that are a little pricier for special occasions but, for the most part, we’re largely wearing good, reliable basic clothing items.

Do we really need to stock up on designer t-shirts and branded socks? It’s nice but not necessary. An easy way to save money on clothes is to stick to generic brands when it comes to stocking and restocking your wardrobe essentials. Stick to generic, affordable brands and save the splashing out on special items designed to last like a coat or evening wear.

6. Work out on a budget

It might be very tempting to invest in expensive workout gear but again – is it necessary? You’ll be working up a sweat regardless of whether you’re wearing designer brand workout clothes or not and that’s what counts, right? Having a few high-end exercise clothing items can be worthwhile and, in some cases, necessary, like a proper pair of running shoes. But, unless you’re doing a highly specific workout that requires certain gear, try and stick to cheaper workout clothing options. You’ll be surprised at how much you can save by simply swapping something out for a cheaper alternative.

7. Buy on sale

Getting discounted clothing doesn’t always mean getting it for next to nothing. Buying sale items, whether they’re 50% off, 25% or even 10% off, is still a valid way to cut back on unnecessary clothing expenses. The key here is to be savvy in your purchasing decisions.

If an item of clothing or an accessory is on sale and the reduced price isn’t far from the original, ask yourself a few key questions. Is it an investment piece or a fun, seasonal item? Can you use it as an accessory item in your current wardrobe or would you need to buy additional items to create an outfit for it? Is it something you can immediately begin wearing (i.e. in season) or would it have to sit in your wardrobe for months until you can start using it?

If you’re still unsure after asking yourself these questions, the best decision is to sleep on it. Come back the next day and see if you still feel drawn to the item. Sometimes impulse can intensify your feelings about something in the moment but, once the moment has passed, so has the feeling. You then discover you actually don’t love the item as much as you thought you did. It’s better to do that before purchasing than after!
